CRACK-IN-THE-ISLAND
*
DESCRIPTION
Crack-in-the-Island is a natural split in the limestone base on the Island. It was once so deep that it appeared to be a bottomless pit, but during the 1800’s it was used as garbage dump and is now just a shallow rut.
LEGEND
The crack was created when Gitchi Manitou stamped his foot upon the white man’s arrival to the Island. Later, a giant tried to use it to escape to the Under Land. The Great Spirit used his magic to trap the giant there, where he is doomed to hang forever.
DIRECTIONS
From the Barracks: Go left on the road behind the Barracks to its end and continue on British Landing Road. Pass the airport, go left on State Road, and take a dirt trail on the left.
From Town: Direct visitors towards the Barracks, follow above directions.
