Other Things To Be Prepared For
1. Exercise ~ Be prepared to do a lot of walking on the Island. The road between the Barracks and town, which you will probably go up at least 2 or 3 times a day, is called Heart Attack Hill for a reason. Be prepared for a particularly rough walk up the day we arrive when you also have to carry your backpack.
2. Bedtimes ~ 10:30 seems like an awfully early time to be going to bed during the summer. Remember that we also get up at 7 am or a little before, and that you will be getting a lot of exercise each day. By the time 10:30 rolls around up there, most people are exhausted.
3. Meals ~ Mackinac meals tend to be big. Even if you never eat breakfast, it’s very important to eat on the Island because of all the exercise that you’ll get. Even with the huge meals, most people tend to lose weight during the week.
4. Manners ~ It is very important to remember to use good manners while on the Island. There are usually guests at dinner, and it is especially important to be on your best behavior when we have Officials from the State Park Commission or Fort Staff eating with us. Also, it is very important to be quiet during announcements at every meal.
