A SCOUT’S GUIDE TO THE

MACKINAC ISLAND
SCOUT SERVICE CAMP

Sarah Grunow & Elissa Davenport
Troop #327, Grosse Pointe, MI

This Guide is Dedicated to
all Scouts, past and present,
who have fallen in love with
Mackinac Island.

This book was compiled by former Mackinac Island Scouts for their Gold Project around 1994.  This is an updated version and we have tried to keep the book as close to its original format and intent as much as possible.

Mackinac Island Honor Guard Advisors, 2011

Dear Mackinac Scout,

Welcome to the Mackinac Island Scout Service Camp.  We know you’re going to have a great time, whether you are an experienced Scout returning for the sixth time, or a new Scout preparing for your first year.

In order to make your week as easy and enjoyable as possible, we wrote this training manual and reference guide.  You may have noticed that very often the materials that Scouts are given are either too detailed to really remember and use, or are so general that they are really no help at all.  In this book, we have gathered all of the information that Scouts need to know and put it together in one place.  We have tried as hard as possible to leave out all of the excess material that can be overwhelming for a new Scout and useless to an experienced one.  There are, however, areas where we have included some extra background information on the subject.  The edition of the book that you are holding is not the complete version of the book.  In the larger manuals, we have also included a very short description of each fort building, some possible biking or hiking routes, some “Mackinac Memories,” and some other things.  It is highly recommended that you take some time to look through those additional sections, even though they are not included in this copy.

We hope that this book is of use to you in preparing for your week of service.  If you have any comments, suggestions, or questions concerning this book or Mackinac Island in general, please feel free to contact us.

                                                          Sincerely,
                                                          Sarah  Grunow
                                                          Elissa Davenport
