GOVERNOR’S RESIDENCE
* * *
DESCRIPTION
The large Victorian cottage to the left of the fort when looking up from the harbor is the Governor’s Summer Residence. It was built in 1902 of Michigan White Pine and Georgia Yellow Pine. It was purchased and renovated by the State of Michigan in 1945.
DIRECTIONS
From the Barracks: Take the road in front of the Barracks right; the residence is in front of you when the road splits.
From Town: Take Fort Street up, past South Sally Ramp, and up Heart Attack Hill. The residence will be on your left after going through the gates.
TOURIST INFORMATION
The Governor's Residence is open to the public every Wednesday morning from 9:30 to 11:30. There is no charge, and all visitors are welcome to go through, so be prepared to mention it. Also, this is one of the official flag stations. The American and State of Michigan flags are flown here daily. Contrary to popular belief, the State of Michigan flag does not indicate the Governor is on the Island. It is flown everyday.
